Imaginary Trip, Day 5: Hanging in Galt

Today Joe and I are headed to Elk Grove and Galt to make our rounds visiting my family. I am so excited that Joe gets to meet all 50 million members of my family today! Galt is about 30 minutes from Downtown Sacramento, and its rural, I know Joe will love it, because he doesn't like big cities. This day will be a little more low key, but still really fun. We turn in a little early, because tomorrow we head back home. Hope Joe doesn't frighten them with his skull shirt!

Southern Yumminess!

Last Friday I made some pulled pork to eat for during the week. And in the South, you can't have pulled pork that's not on a bun! Ok, you can, it's just better that way. I really enjoyed the pork, it was cheap and easy to make. Of course it would have been better if I had cooked it on the grill, but we don't have one.

Here is the recipe (if you can call it that)
1 3-4 pound boston butt (pork roast)
1 cup of chicken broth
A few shakes of BBQ sauce

Throw it in the slow cooker for 8 hours on low, and shred with 2 forks. Serve on buns with more BBQ sauce and some pickles, or coleslaw. Yum!

I also got some super fresh South Carolina peaches and made a peach cobbler! This one is for sure not close to my Mama Jean's cobbler, but I liked it. Joe and I enjoyed it with some vanilla ice cream. If you want the recipe, let me know, I am feeling too lazy to dig it out.

You're just too good to be true. Can't take my mind off of you

You already know I love houses. When Joe and I drive around, it's the houses I look at. I went to Cane Bay Plantation back in June, and I am STILL thinking about the decor in these houses! And of course, I took tons of pictures to share! I will have to make a trek to another community and see how they stack up. I thought that this is a great example of Charleston flair with a traditional, but casual edge. And it wasn't cheesy!

Here is some eye candy for you, let me know what you think!

Entrance to the community

The designer picked the best mirrors I have ever seen! I wanted to walk off with a few, but thought it would be a little noticable

A little nook in the dining room. What a great idea!

A SITTING ROOM! I didn't even know these existed outside of England. If we can afford it, our next house will have a sitting room. Preferably with these chairs

I'm Chuck Bass...

My sister in law Tiffany and I don't get to meet in person very often, but we exchange mile long emails when we should be working that cover such serious topics as diets full of Snickers bars, frizzy hair, selfish children that are way too cute to be allowed (shout out to Brady!) and shameless slothism.

Today we somehow got on the topic of Gossip Girl as fluffy brain candy. And Chuck Bass. Sigh. The suffering gorgeous ascot-wearing dude with the best emo hair that I think is a player on the show. Not sure, I haven't watched it. But, I love him, oh how I love him! I somehow stumbled on Gossip Girl on YouTube and now I HAVE to watch it. Come on, how hot is this guy? The voice!?! It kills me.

So, please excuse me while I waste a few hours on this blog
Chuck galore and sassy dialog to boot. If you are offended by profanity, just look at the pictures, skip the captions.

Imaginary Trip: Day 4. Graduation Day!

The whole reason we came to California: my sister's high school graduation! Oh heck! After grabbing "breakfast" at (where else, Starbucks)Joe, my mother and I make our way to the high school to watch my sister proudly walk the stage. My sister Ashlee meets us there, and unlike Jess' 8th grade graduation, we won't embarrass her by heckling her from the stands. (That day was awesome!). Joe and I look dashing, don't you think?

Of course, after the graduation is where the fun starts. We get to indulge with lunch at.....wait for it... The Olive Garden, aka the restaurant you have to go to for Mother's Day, Graduations, Grandparents are in town, Girls Day Out, and other random events, which is why Olive Garden always has a 2 hour wait. Uh. Anyway, after lots of breadsticks and photos and snalcks at home, Jess is off to Sober Grad Night (emphasis on the sober) and Joe and I will settle in at home with my mom to watch a movie. Mom has a hard time with us growing up, so we will distract her. What's on the screen? Mother, mother, why do you do this to us? It's (of course) a Lifetime movie. "Tragedy in Texas: A Family's Pain" is on tonight. This one is about a small town in Texas where one family looses 2 children in a white water rafting accident. They struggle with their loss and then they decide to adopt twin sisters that lost their parents in a rafting accident as well. All sorts of drama happens, and it's boring. Starring that dude who was Joey from Blossom. Yeah, good choice Mom.

The biggest bangs you will ever see on a child

My mom and I were Skyping back on the 3rd, and when she was moving, Jessie and her found this photo of me. Oh, my, gosh. Could I look any wackier? No wonder I didn't know about this picture, as soon as Lifetouch delivered it, my mom must have hidden it.

Imaginary Trip Day 3. In the city!

Not too much going on today, Joe and I are headed to San Francisco to check out the sights and have a photo session. I have 2 outfits planned for the day, because photos are a great chance to look twice as cute! A sassy blue dress and awesome slingback pumps, and a cute top and skinny jeans round out the day. Not too much jewelry on, just my ring and my hoop earrings. I also have a jacket for when the sun goes down, in Frisco it gets chilly, even in the summer.

After the pics, Joe and I head to fisherman's wharf and check out the aquarium and Union Square. A photo op at Golden Gate park, and a trip to the Planetarium, and it's a full day!

Us vs Them

When I left California a little over 2 and almost a half years ago I had not idea that I would be moving to one of the last places in the country where a Californian would relocate to. THE SOUTH. Cue scary music. Not saying there is anything wrong with the South, but I would be lying if I said there wasn't a stereotype of the region, just like the stereotypes about California. For the record, I am not a hippie, I don't go to war protests and I am not blonde. Nor do I drive a convertible or own a tiny dog.

My experience in South Carolina has been very positive. It is so completely different from where I grew up that it's hard to describe it. It's the little things out here that make the difference. Check out some of the little things that make such a big difference to me:

1. Sidewalks are not standard. The newer neighborhoods have them, but most of them don't
2. Everything is green here. All the time. So the state doesn't catch fire once a year
3. You don't hear languages other than English very often
4. People can ride in the back of pickup trucks and not wear helmets on motorcycles
5. There are a limited number of Starbucks'. And the ones we do have are very large. Like banks or a spa. Oh, and there aren't any 24 hour ones either
6. People have yards here and houses that don't overlap one another
7. Staying on the house note, there is no stucco here. I didn't know vinyl siding was plastic until I touched it one day
8. You can shoot fireworks into the sky! This one is still amusing to me. I love the risk these people are taking, they could set something on fire!
9. Barbecue is not a fourth of July event. It's an art. Everyone has a favorite barbecue sauce as well. Did you know that there are different kinds of barbacue sauce from different regions? Memphis, Carolina, Kansas City, Tennessee Whiskey, Carolina Sweet, and it goes on. All are good, I am partial to the Carolina Classic and Sweet sauces. Oh and barbecue is not hamburgers and hot dogs, its pulled pork, preferably on a bun with coleslaw on top. Sometimes its ribs. But mostly Boston Butt (which I think is actually a shoulder)
10. You can't buy alcohol in most counties on Sundays. Get your drunk self to church!
11. There are no cows. This really disturbs me, I should be within 15 minutes of a dairy

The reason I bring this is up is because I was having a conversation with a co-worker who was born and raised here about why I probably wouldn't go back to live in California if given the chance. And for the first time, I said "they" when referring to Californians. I know, not that big of a deal right? Wrong, this is me, the same girl who cried when she handed over her California drivers license to get her SC one. I have also stopped referring to CA as "home" for the most part. As in "yeah, back home it doesn't rain in the summer". It's "yeah, in CA there isn't too much lightning". The "back east" phrase still follows me around, but people give me some slack on that one. I still have a hard time knowing where I am geographically.

I can't explain how this little shift happened or why. I do miss CA, don't get me wrong, but not as much as I used to. I have actually read things in the paper about SC and been pretty proud that its my home state. All places have pros and cons (except Tennessee, which I have never been to, but for some reason I am completely obsessed with. They have no cons)and I am pretty happy with the little state we call home.

Here are just a few things that have stolen my heart from California:

1. Aforementioned pulled pork. I didn't know such yumminess existed!

2. Bridges! We have such wonderful views of rivers and trees and harbors from all of the bridges here. Best of all is the Ravenel Bridge, linking Charleston to Mt Pleasant.

3. Southern accents! I wish I had one, they are so cute! When I am old, I want to talk like Paula Deen. Which is impossible because she is from Georgia, but still, close enough.

4. Downtown Charleston. Joe and I haven't explored it too much, but I really do love it. The houses are glorious!

5. I don't really have a picture for this one, but I like that Charleston feels like a small town. The whole area is about 600K people, whereas the Sacramento area has about 2 million people, which is half of our entire state! But you have tons of things to do here, and you are only a few hours away from more stuff should you run out here! I love that we can drive to Atlanta or Charlotte or Jacksonville in the same amount of time it used to take me to drive from Sac to LA!

I guess you can say I am letting go of what used to be and embracing the here and now. While my birth state will always be special to me, I now have room in my heart for a new state. But, check out this lovely panoramic I found on Wikipedia of Sacramento, when I look at it, it feels like looking at a photo of a long lost friend.

Imaginary Trip, Day 2. Hello Family!

Joe and I have arrived! We are thrilled to see my mom and sisters and Joe is enjoying the humidity free summer. And boy, how I missed the cows!

We start the day by grabbing some Starbucks and giving Joe his first taste of California life! He protested, but we found a drink he can enjoy as well. Viviano, some sort of smoothie. I am enjoying my Caffe Vanilla Frappacino and we are ready to roll! We take 80 over to Sacramento and can't wait to see the sights!

We head to downtown Sacramento to check out the state capitol and hopefully have an Arnold sighting! We walk across the river on the Tower Bridge and get some great photos together! Old Sacramento is tons of fun and I can't wait to do a little makeup shopping at Sephora at Arden Mall and grab lunch at P.F. Chang's. Yum.

After the day out, we head back to my mom's place in Vacaville and Jessie and I take a run so I can run off that Chinese food! Dinner is grilled flank steak with corn and a baked potato with fruit salad for dessert. Joe and I go for a walk to talk about our day, and we are ready to head to the city tomorrow for a photo shoot! Wow, I know, right?

Oh, and here is what I (and Joe) are wearing. It's summer!

Imaginary Trip, Day 1 part 2

Why is our flight all the way on the other side of the airport? Is it impossible to connect to a flight in the same wing of the airport?

Joe and I are hustling to the other terminal to make our 9:12 flight from Atlanta, Georgia to San Francisco, California. We have about 23 minutes to travel the 36 gates and hand our tickets over before we settle down for the longer flight of the day. Let's hope I don't get lost!

I made sure the Joe is fully prepared for this trip! Take a look at what he's got along for this little journey:

Joe's got a white cotton T shirt on (the white shirt makes him look bigger, if can believe that!) and some comfy plaid shorts on. The athletic shorts were in the wash, better luck next time. Joe also has his running shoes on! A pair of comfy white Keds that are easy to take off in the security line and easy to slip off during the flight. Joe also has his sporty backpack with his clothes and toiletries packed away.

I wouldn't make Joe suffer through a four hour flight, so he has a portable DVD player and a man-movie, The Dark Knight, to kill some time. We also packed him some water and some protein shakes, just in case they don't feed us on the flight. While we were waiting in line to hand over the boarding passes, Joe saw a Subway and grabbed a meatball sub to go! Let's make sure he has a napkin so he doesn't mess up that white shirt!

We've made it to the plane and over to our seats and we are settling in for the long stretch. I can't wait to show Joe the city as we fly in! And the Sierra Nevadas! And the Sacto River! I am so excited to show Joe where I come from!

Coming up, meeting up with my mom and sister's and a whole bunch of funnery!

I'm a bad mother....

To my dogs. Everyday I come home from work excited to see my boys, and an hour later I leave for the gym because I have to get away from them. They don't listen to me. At all. I tell them to sit, they stand. I tell them to go potty, and they wrestle in the backyard. I tell them to come in and they run away. When it's time to go in their homes for the night, Bus runs upstairs. Or under the table where I can't reach him. Within an hour I am so sick of yelling at them and telling them to quit playing so rough, I can't stand to be in the same room.

Joe on the other hand, has complete control over them. It's night and day and I can't stand it. Caleb actually "talks" back to me when I tell him to do something. I try to do all the same things Joe does, but nothing works. They just don't listen to their mother.

Ok, rant over. I hate starting the week on a negative note.

Let's go on an imaginary trip....

I like to plan things. I give events way too much thought. But hey, it's fun for me. So, let's go on an imaginary trip, shall we? It's June 2010, and Joe and I are getting ready to fly to California for my sister's graduation.

There we are, waiting in line at the gate, tickets in hand. I'll get to Joe tomorrow, but me? I am ready for the 5 1/2 hour flight. We have a 50 minute flight to Atlanta, a 45 minute layover, which is really no layover at all, because you have to get off the plane, cross the huge airport and get onto your plane. Hustle, Hustle. And of course the 4 hour flight to San Francisco.

So back to me (lol). What am I wearing, and what do I have with me? Let's take a peek.

I'm wearing a striped V neck top and skinny jeans with black wedges. I've got my cocktail ring (yay for sparkles!) and my hoop earrings on. In my polka dot roller bag (I only carry on) I've got clothes for 5 days. More on that to come. I also have my makeup, which for today consists of the Laura Mercier Flawess Face Kit, Cargo Eyeshadow and Lorac Liquid Eyeliner, with a Stila Pomegranate Lip and Cheek Stain. I'm trying to look presentable, not made up.

In my Coach bag, with my Coach wallet (I know, what a snob!) I've got my Dasani water, my Ipod and a fashion magazine in case I get bored. I also have my zebra print scarf, because it gets chilly on the plane. I also have our plane tickets, our ID's and our spending money!

So Joe and I passed security, we have made it through the ticket booth, and we are finding our way to our seats. Since it's a little commuter plane we are lucky and get the row of 3 seats to ourselves. Joe takes the aisle seat for more elbow room (watch that drink cart!) and I get the window seat, yippee! Since it's 6 in the morning I get to watch Charleston get smaller and smaller until I can't make out anything but trees.

Joe settles into his seat half asleep and I have my headphones on listening to Bob Marley. When the flight attendant (is that what we are calling them now? I get confused) comes by to get our drinks, Joe orders an orange juice and I go for my standard in-flight drink, Ginger Ale. Party Time!

And just as we are getting settled in, "Ladies and Gentleman we are now beginning our descent. Please bring your tray tables and seats to an upright and locked position. Please turn off any electrical devices and stow any luggage under the seat in front of you or in the overhead storage bin. We will be landing in Atlanta Georgia in approximately 10 minutes." Weeeeeeeee!!! Landing!!!!!!!!!

Come back tomorrow to see what Joe is up to, and if we make the flight to San Francisco.

Somebody Save Me

Joe and I spend most weekends watching one of our favorite shows "Smallville", which is about Clark Kent (aka Superman) growing up in Kansas. It shows how he got his powers, how he met up with the Justice League (Superhero club) and how he and Lex Luthor (Bald Billionaire Baddie) became enemies. Joe had watched a few seasons before, and I had never watched it. I thought I would give it a shot, and I love it.

It has great special effects, good stories (most of the time) and really good emotional and action scenes too. Joe and I are almost finished with the 7th season, and season 8 just ended, so we are almost out of stories. But I am really digging the Superman mythology. I have never before watched a Superman movie. So yeah, I watched "Superman Returns" but that doesn't count. I hated it. Smallville does a great job about making you care about Clark as a person, you want him to do well, you want him to be the hero. Good stuff. Oh, and you can't go wrong when you have eye candy for both the ladies and the fellas.

Apparently there are no ugly people in Smallville's Kansas:

Chloe Sullivan, Clark's best friend and Joe's favorite chick:

Lois Lane, Clark's eventual love:

Kara Kent, Clark's cousin from Krypton (and yes, she dresses like that normally):

And for the ladies, the guys aren't too bad either:

Oliver Queen (aka the Green Arrow) Clark's rich crime fighter friend (Sorry, I had to do the topless one, Joe and I had a laugh about it last night:

And of course, Clark Kent, Superman:
